Science educator, TV personality and author Bill Nye signed his latest book, Unstoppable, at Barnes & Noble at Vanderbilt March 31. The event drew nearly 400 science enthusiasts, many of them teachers from across the country in Nashville for the National Science Teachers Association’s annual conference.
Best known as the host of the Emmy Award-winning children’s TV show Bill Nye the Science Guy, Nye—a former mechanical engineer—has become one of the nation’s most outspoken science educators. In his latest book, Nye tackles the environment and climate change with his trademark optimism, humor and scientific curiosity.
The March 31 event kicked off with a special presentation honoring Nashville’s Urban Green Lab, a nonprofit devoted to health and sustainability, and its new mobile lab, which provides students with unique field trip opportunities. Nashville Vice Mayor David Briley offered remarks, and Urban Green Lab Executive Director Jennifer Westerholme briefly discussed the organization’s mission before introducing Nye to an ecstatic gathering of fans.
In addition, Paulette Lynch, the Vanderbilt Department of Chemistry’s storeroom manager, collaborated with John Lasiter, Barnes & Noble at Vanderbilt’s communications manager, to create an original window display for the event that featured an item from Lynch’s personal collection.
