MEDIA ADVISORY: Elementary school students to debate

Students from 11 elementary schools in Metro Nashville and one from West Helena, Arkansas, will participate in the Nashville Elementary School Debate Consortium on Saturday, April 9, at J.E. Moss Elementary School. The event is sponsored by Free Speech: The Movement, an educational program designed to teach students critical thinking and communication skills through the use of academic debate. This year’s topic will be: “Resolved: That public universities should be free to attend.”

WHAT: The Nashville Elementary School Debate Consortium

WHO: Students from Nashville-based Carter-Lawrence Elementary School, Crieve Hall Elementary School, Cumberland Elementary School, Granbery Elementary School, J.E. Moss Elementary School, Henry Maxwell Elementary School, Lakeview Design Center Elementary, Smith Springs Elementary School, Thomas A. Edison Elementary School, and KIPP Academy in Helena, Arkansas.

Free Speech: The Movement is an educational program designed to teach students critical thinking and communication skills through the use of academic debate. Adrienne Neal, Kenisha Hawthorne, and M.L. Sandoz founded the program in the fall of 2011. Due to the program’s success, the number of participating schools has grown each year.
