The 2016 Cuninggim Lecture on Women in Culture and Society—presented March 22 by the Margaret Cuninggim Women’s Center at Vanderbilt—will feature writer, performer, activist, musician and biologist Julia Serano.
Her lecture, “Making Feminist and Queer Movements More Inclusive,” will be at 5 p.m. in the Board of Trust Room of the Student Life Center. The event is free and open to the public.
Julia Serano is author of Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity (2007) and Excluded: Making Feminist and Queer Movements More Inclusive (2013). Her work tackles a broad range of topics related to gender and sexuality, including feminism and queer/LGBTQIA+ activism, transgender identities and issues, media and psychiatric depictions of gender and sexual minorities, sexism and sexualization, the “nature versus nurture” debate, bisexuality, femininity and femme politics.
The Cuninggim Lecture on Women in Culture and Society offers an occasion to raise awareness about the ways in which gender shapes and is shaped by our lived experiences. Each Cuninggim lecturer empowers Vanderbilt community members to expand their activist reach and become more involved in positive social change outside the University.
