Emmy-winning children’s TV creator to speak at Curb Center Feb. 12

J.J. Johnson, an Emmy Award-winning creator of children’s television programs, will speak at the Curb Center for Art, Enterprise and Public Policy at Vanderbilt on Friday, Feb. 12.

The discussion will begin at 4 p.m. The Curb Center is located at 1801 Edgehill Ave. A reception will follow.

Johnson strives to make shows that are educational, meaningful and reflective of our diverse world. He is known for challenging the norms and is not afraid to explore sensitive topics. He is particularly passionate about tackling gender equality, purposefully producing several shows with strong female leads and even creating a genderless character to explore timely and important issues related to gender identity. In addition, he is currently leading multiple initiatives to mentor female writers and directors in hope of leveling the gender disparity in children’s television.

Johnson is a founding partner and the creative force behind Sinking Ship Entertainment. He has created, executed and produced 15 series, including international hits This is Daniel Cook, Annedroids and the Emmy Award-winning Dino Dan. In 2015, he made Emmy history by being nominated three times in the same directing category for three different series, ultimately winning for Odd Squad.
