Dora Angelaki, Ph.D., the Wilhelmina Robertson Professor and chair of Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, will provide a “computational perspective on autism” during the next Flexner Discovery Lecture on Thursday, Jan. 14.

Dora Angelaki, Ph.D.

Her lecture, sponsored by the Vanderbilt Brain Institute, will begin at 4 p.m. in 208 Light Hall.

Angelaki, who also is professor of Psychology and Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rice University, specializes in the neural mechanisms of spatial perception and spatial navigation, and how they impact complex cognitive behavior.

She and her colleagues study how multisensory information flows between different brain areas and how internal states can modulate this information flow. One of their goals is to better understand and improve treatment of sensory, motor, memory and cognitive deficits that contribute to disorders like autism.

Angelaki earned her bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, and her master’s and doctoral degrees in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering in Minneapolis.

She has received many honors and awards for her research, and she is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
