University Web Communications was the winner of this year’s football sustainability competition and was named the “greenest group on campus” for the football season. The annual competition is sponsored by Waste Management Inc., Vanderbilt Athletics and the Vanderbilt Sustainability and Environmental Management Office (SEMO). Web Communications celebrated its win with a catered tailgate and on-field recognition during the Vanderbilt vs. Kentucky football game Nov. 14.
Chelsea Hamilton, sustainability outreach coordinator with SEMO, and Tim Wells, area vice president for Waste Management, Inc., presented a commemorative football autographed by Vanderbilt head football coach Derek Mason and an engraved recycled glass plate to Lacy Paschal, director of Web Communications, and Beth Fox, director of web content strategy and project management.
The University Web Communications was recognized for its efforts to reduce printing needs across campus. The group routinely works with different campus departments to convert applications to digital formats, which reduces printing and saves paper. Web Communications staff also recycle within the office, use occupancy sensors to turn lights off when the office is empty, and encourage the use of alternative transportation.
The athletics sustainability competition invites all Vanderbilt groups, teams, departments, classes and campus organizations to compete for the title of “greenest group on campus” by completing a checklist of sustainable actions under the categories of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle; Energy and Water Savings; Transportation; and Innovative Actions. Entries are accepted twice a year, once during football season and once during basketball season, and are judged using a standardized scoring rubric.
