Filip Banovac, M.D., chief of Vascular and Interventional Radiology at Georgetown University, has been named section chief of Interventional Radiology within the Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Banovac is a graduate of Duke University and attended medical school at Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. After a residency at Georgetown, he completed the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Postdoctoral Fellowship at the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute and fellowship training in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at Stanford. He joined the faculty at Georgetown in 2004.
His research interests include augmented instrument navigation and precision delivery of instruments into imaging targets. He was a collaborator at the NIH Center for Interventional Oncology. In 2009 he was awarded the Gary Becker Young Investigator Award by the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR), where he has served as the Research Policy division chair, vice chair, and now chair-elect of the SIR Foundation
“I am very excited to be back in Nashville and at Vanderbilt,” said Banovac, who worked at Vanderbilt briefly before he attended medical school. “I feel that my family and I closed the full circle by coming back. Vanderbilt has grown immensely and the opportunities here are immense. I look forward to expanding our services to our patients and fostering Vanderbilt Interventional Radiology as a national leader in minimally invasive image guided therapies.”
