Youth in a neighborhood near Vanderbilt will benefit from a donation of campus bicycles that went unclaimed last academic year.
Vanderbilt’s Sustainability and Environmental Management Office and Plant Operations collaborated to donate bicycles to the Edgehill Bike Club that were left behind on campus at the end of the 2014 academic year and approved for recycling by the Office of Housing and Residential Education.
The bikes were collected and stored for months by Vanderbilt’s grounds department and eventually released to OHARE for recycling after no one at the university had claimed them. On May 29, SEMO staff and student interns delivered 31 bikes to the Edgehill Bike Club to begin the process of refurbishment.
Founded in 2013 by Terry Key, the Edgehill Bike Club has distributed more than 500 bicycles to children in the Edgehill neighborhood, in the process strengthening community ties and promoting positive change. In addition to giving free bicycles and helmets to neighborhood youth, the organization provides bicycle maintenance and repair lessons, neighborhood cleanups and life lessons to help prevent crime in the community.
