Funding opportunity: Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award for Medical Scientists

The 2016 Career Award for Medical Scientists (CAMS) supports physician-scientists who are committed to an academic career bridging advanced postdoctoral/fellowship training and the early years of faculty service. Grants are $700,000 for a five-year period.

Proposals must be in the area of basic biomedical, disease-oriented or translational research. Proposals in health services research or involving large-scale clinical trials are not eligible. The Burroughs Wellcome Fund anticipates making 12 to 14 awards for the upcoming cycle. In addition, up to two awards will be made to clinically trained psychiatrists who focus their research at the interface between psychiatry and neuroscience.

To be competitive for the CAMS award, the ideal candidate must have at least two years or more of postdoctoral research experience, be two years away from becoming an independent investigator, be a first author on at least one publication in a high-impact top-tier journal, and have a significant publication record.

An optional workshop on this opportunity is being hosted by Jessica Robinson, director of Foundation Relations, from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, July 8, at 2525 West End Ave., Suite 450, in the Large Conference Room.

Note: Beginning this year, CAMS has moved from an institutional nomination to self-nomination process.

Those interested in applying must submit a pre-proposal through the foundation’s website by 3 p.m. Aug. 5, 2015.
