Summer doesn’t have to be boring with VRWC programs

The Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center offers some exciting options for kids this summer.

Registration is now open for both CampVandy and the Vanderbilt Swim School.

CampVandy

Camp Vandy (Vanderbilt University)

CampVandy’s mission is to provide a safe and unique opportunity for children to learn valuable skills while making new friends through themed programs that are challenging, educational and fun.

CampVandy is offered each week from June 1 to July 31 for ages 4–13. Each week has its own theme on which activities and special events are based.

The Nashville community can sign up for CampVandy for $195 per week. Vanderbilt employees and VRWC members receive a special CampVandy discounted rate of $165 per week.

Camp runs Monday–Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each week. Early care is available from 7 to 8:30 a.m., and after care is available from 4:15 to 6 p.m. for an additional charge.

Parents have the option of adding a mini-camp to the regular camp week for children ages 8–13 for an extra $50 per camp. Mini-camps will run for two hours each day with a specialized teacher. A science mini-camp will be offered the week of July 13–17, and a performing arts mini-camp the week of July 27–31.

CampVandy W.I.L.D.

The VRWC offers CampVandy W.I.L.D. (Wilderness Immersion and Leadership Development) for ages 13–15 the weeks of June 22–26 and July 13–17. This program is designed to provide teens with an opportunity to break from the typical summer experience and explore the wilderness areas around Middle Tennessee. Weekly outdoor activities will include hiking, flat water boating, rock climbing, a high ropes course and zip lining for $285 per week.

Vanderbilt Swim School

Vanderbilt Swim School (Vanderbilt University)

The Vanderbilt Swim School hosts summer swim lessons for ages six months and up. No matter the skill level, there is a class for you and your family.

VSS also offers a wide variety of classes and times to meet your needs and schedule. The CampVandy Swim School transfer program is one of the most popular. Parents must purchase after care services through CampVandy to be able to participate in the CampVandy Swim School transfer program. When registering for Vanderbilt Swim School group lessons, you must indicate if transfer is either for the 4 p.m. or 4:45 p.m. transfer time.

All group lessons consist of four 40-minute classes (Monday–Thursday) at a cost of $70 per session. Private lessons also are available and consist of four 40-minute classes at a cost of $150 per session.

Acorn Swim Team

New this year is the Acorn Swim Team. The goal of the team is to offer all young people around Nashville ages 4–18 the opportunity to learn and improve on existing swimming skills, enhance community spirit by meeting and socializing with other children, teach and encourage sportsmanship, and create a fun-filled yet competitive summer swim experience for each participant and their family.

Young people who turn 4–18 before June 1 are eligible to swim. Children 7 and up must be able to swim in any fashion one length of a 25-meter pool. (Note: Any swimmer will be allowed to hold onto the side of pool or lane line floats; however, swimmers will not be allowed to pull themselves forward or touch the bottom of the pool.) Children ages 4–6 must be able to swim 15 yards unassisted and 25 yards unassisted by the third week of swimming.

Dues for the 2015 swim season are $165 per swimmer with a $50 deposit. Please note that the above amount does not include the cost of the team swimsuit or swim cap, which must be purchased separately.

Practices will be held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7 to 8 a.m. for ages 7 and up, and from 8 to 8:30 a.m. for ages 6 and under. Tuesday and Thursday practices will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. for ages 7 and up, while the 6 and under group will be held from 4:30 to 5 p.m.
