Increased security measures in place at Wesley Place Garage

Vanderbilt University Police have issued the following notice:

On Saturday, Feb. 21, at approximately 11:40 p.m., the Metropolitan Nashville Police and Vanderbilt University Police departments responded to a shooting incident that occurred in the Wesley Place Garage. Responding officers located a deceased victim, not affiliated with the university, with injuries from an apparent gunshot wound.

The safety and security of the Vanderbilt community is of the utmost importance, and as a result, the Vanderbilt University Police Department has implemented security measures and initiatives to address safety concerns. Increased, high-visibility patrols and stationary posts began the morning following the incident, after police and investigators completed processing the crime scene at Wesley Place Garage.

VUPD has assigned an officer to monitor the Wesley Place Garage and surrounding area and provide a high-visibility presence around the clock and seven days a week. In addition to this stationary post, high-visibility patrols have been implemented to supplement security coverage in all campus garages and surface lots, with special focus being directed to the 21st Avenue corridor.

These initiatives and additional security measures, which will act as a visible crime deterrent and also serve as a proactive step in identifying and addressing suspicious activity in the area, will remain in effect until further notice.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department continues to actively investigate this incident.
