Chapters bring Vanderbilt classrooms to alumni

Vanderbilt alumni are lifelong learners and frequently express a desire for programs that fulfill their passion. The Alumni Association is responding by offering events that bring faculty expertise to Chapter cities.

Commodore Classrooms are an accessible, and increasingly popular, opportunity for alumni who seek the familiar academic enrichment of a Vanderbilt classroom. Commodore Classrooms feature Vanderbilt faculty, and sometimes alumni, who lead a discussion on a variety of topics.

Classrooms take place across the country.“These events are very popular in our area, often attracting alumni who may not attend other events,” explains Chicago Chapter President Seth Crist, BA’04. “They give alumni the opportunity to join an engaging discussion or lecture—perhaps the type some have not experienced since graduation.”

“We discuss topics like elections, urban development and ethical law practices that are particularly hot in the D.C. area,” adds Jodie Leeka, BE’10, ME’11, Washington, D.C. Chapter president. “It is a brief flashback to the Vanderbilt classroom—just without the homework!”

Showcasing the diversity of experience found across the university, Commodore Classrooms appeal to a broad audience.

“They attract alumni from all decades. Alumni working in related professions attend, but those without any career affiliation equally enjoy the intellectual stimulation,” says Leeka.

In 2014, chapters held 25 Commodore Classroom events featuring Vanderbilt professors or alumni.

Goldfarb (Vanderbilt)

Michael Goldfarb, H. Fort Flowers Professor of Mechanical Engineering, captivated 30 Boston alumni and friends with his program, Minimizing Physical Disability with Robotic Arms, Legs, and Exoskeletons.

Shaneyfelt (Vanderbilt)

Sheri Shaneyfelt, senior lecturer in Renaissance and Baroque Art, discussed the Italian Renaissance with nearly 50 Nashville Commodores.

Both Crist and Leeka share that they consistently receive positive feedback from alumni about these classrooms. With interest from alumni continually increasing, the spring offerings will feature 14 Commodore Classrooms covering topics that include health care, education and U.S. relations with Cuba.

A complete list of Commodore Classrooms can be found on the alumni events calendar and events for a specific chapter can be found on a chapter webpage.
