Alex McNeill, executive director of More Light Presbyterians, a national organization devoted to advocacy, education and support for LGBTQ people and issues within the church and beyond, will speak at a lunchtime event on Thursday, Nov. 20, at Vanderbilt Divinity School.
“Re-imagining Gender Within the Church” will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Divinity School Reading Room.
Marriage continues to be a huge issue within churches, but how can we look beyond the marriage issue to other ways that churches define people according to gender? How can we begin to work beyond the gender binary? What would that look like in everyday practice? How would the church be changed? As a theologian and the first trans person to head a national mainline denominational agency, McNeill brings unique insight to the conversation.
The Nov. 20 event is co-sponsored by GABLE; the Carpenter Program in Religion, Gender and Sexuality; Vanderbilt’s Office of LGBTQIA Life; the Office of Women’s Concerns (VDS); Vanderbilt UKIRK; and Project Dialogue.
