‘Food and Faith’ author presents pair of events Nov. 12

Project Dialogue is co-sponsoring two events on Wednesday, Nov. 12, in collaboration with the Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society, the Cal Turner Program, the Society of St. Cornelius and Vanderbilt Divinity School.

Norman Wirzba will speak on the themes of his book Food and Faith: A Theology of Eating. A breakfast discussion, “Jesus and the Environment: Bases for Creation Care,” is set for 8 a.m. in the Divinity School Reading Room. A lunch symposium, “Food Justice,” will be held at noon at the Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society located in the 2525 West End Building, Suite 400.

Wirzba, a professor of theology and ecology at Duke University, pursues research and teaching interests at the intersections of theology, philosophy, ecology, and agrarian and environmental studies. His work focuses on understanding and promoting practices that can equip both rural and urban church communities to be more faithful and responsible members of creation.

Wirzba has published The Paradise of God: Renewing Religion in an Ecological Age and Living the Sabbath: Discovering the Rhythms of Rest and Delight. His most recent books are Food and Faith: A Theology of Eating and Making Peace with the Land: God’s Call to Reconcile with Creation (with Fred Bahnson). He also has edited several books, including The Essential Agrarian Reader: The Future of Culture, Community and the Land and The Art of the Commonplace: The Agrarian Essays of Wendell Berry.

He also serves as general editor for the book series Culture of the Land: A Series in the New Agrarianism, published by the University Press of Kentucky. He is co-founder and executive committee member of the Society for Continental Philosophy and Theology.
