The Kirkland Hall bells will ring in a special pattern at noon on Thursday to mark the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States.
Instead of chiming 12 times to mark the noon hour, the bells will ring four times in total to commemorate the four sites at which terrorists crashed passenger airliners on Sept. 11, 2001 – the North and South towers of the World Trade Center complex, the Pentagon and into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania – resulting in the loss of almost 3,000 lives. Each bell that is chimed will linger for a moment of silence before the next bell is rung.
Because this national day of remembrance can be accompanied by significant grief and sorrow for some in the Vanderbilt community, the Office of the University Chaplain and Religious Life and the Psychological and Counseling Center are available to assist on Sept. 11 and beyond.
