The Fall 2014 concert season at The Blair School of Music is sparkling with star power, with special guests including the acclaimed Clare College Choir from Cambridge, England (Sept. 24); a performance and master class from Grammy-winning mezzo-soprano Susan Graham (Sept. 27); a joint performance from mandolinist/composer Chris Thile, of Punch Brothers, and bassist/composer Edgar Meyer (Sept. 30); virtuoso clarinetist David Shifrin (Oct. 29); and a master class from pianist Jonathan Biss, who will be in town to perform with the Nashville Symphony (Nov. 19).
The Blair School continues its 50th anniversary celebrations with a concert honoring pianist Roland Schneller, the sole original faculty member still teaching at Blair (Sept. 13); Cornelia Heard & Friends, spotlighting Heard, a faculty member since 1982 who was also one of the first precollege students to enroll in 1964 (Nov. 1); and a gala presentation of Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus by Vanderbilt Opera Theatre and Vanderbilt University Orchestra (Nov. 14 and 16).
Other performances of note include a yearlong mini-series in which pianist Craig Nies and violinist Carolyn Huebl will perform all 16 of W.A. Mozart’s Sonatas for Piano and Violin (Sept. 5, Oct. 26, March 29 and April 17); a cabaret-style evening with the Blair Voices for which the audience will be seated on stage with the singers (Sept. 6); and the debut performance of the Blair String Quartet with its new first violinist, Stephen Miahky (Oct. 4).
Most events at the Blair School of Music are free and open to the public. (Exceptions are clearly noted in the concert calendar.) Free parking is available in West Garage, across the street from the entrance of the school, and free valet parking is provided for many events.
