Sten Vermund, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health, has received the 2014 Allan Rosenfield Alumni Awardfor Excellence from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in New York City.
Established in 2009 to honor the late Allan Rosenfield, M.D., who served as dean of the Mailman School from 1986 to 2008, the award recognizes the achievements of the school’s outstanding alumni and their leadership in the field of public health.
Vermund, who earned his Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the Mailman School in 1990, will receive the award during the school’s sixth annual Alumni Summit for Public Health Leadership on June 5.
Vermund is Amos Christie Professor of Global Health and professor of Pediatrics, Health Policy, Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology at Vanderbilt. He is known internationally for his leadership of HIV care, treatment and prevention projects throughout the world.
He is a member of the Institute of Medicine and a fellow of the Infectious Disease Society of America, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the American College of Preventive Medicine.
Vermund also is principal investigator of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)/Fogarty Global Health Fellows Program, a consortium of Vanderbilt, Emory, Cornell and Duke Universities that supports the training of global health researchers.
