VUPD Chief August Washington (Vanderbilt)

Vanderbilt University Police Department chief August Washington has been promoted to associate vice chancellor and chief of police, Vice Chancellor for Administration Jerry Fife has announced.

“With his skills and vast experience, Chief Washington has provided Vanderbilt with a successful and committed leader who understands what it means to be a chief of police in a university and medical center setting,” Fife said.  “Through his effective guidance, he has brought our police department to the next level.”

Under Washington, VUPD has successfully broadened its scope with the addition of Vanderbilt Health One Hundred Oaks and achieved reaccreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies, among other projects.

Washington joined Vanderbilt in July 2009. His 35-year career in law enforcement has included service at seven universities, including the University of Tennessee–Knoxville from 2005-09.
