Summer Academy at Vanderbilt for the Young (Vanderbilt University)

The Summer Academy at Vanderbilt for the Young (SAVY) provides a dynamic, fast-paced curriculum experience to qualifying gifted children in rising first through seventh grades. Vanderbilt professors, master teachers and graduate students offer accelerated SAVY courses that cover a wide variety of topics.

Who?

Gifted students entering grades 1-7 in the fall of 2014, specifically students who test at the 95th percentile and above on a standardized achievement or ability test, are eligible for SAVY.

What?

Small classes designed for the exceptionally talented and motivated learner. Class size is limited to approximately 12 students for grade 1-3 classes, and approximately 15 students for grades 4-7. Courses are taught by Vanderbilt scholars and master teachers. The summer course offerings include Creative Writing, Genetics, Cultural Anthropology, Chemistry, Algebra and Neuroscience.

When?

  • Session 1: June 9–13, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. (Monday–Friday)
  • Session 2: June 16–20, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. (Monday–Friday)
  • Session 3: June 23–27, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. (Monday–Friday)
  • Session 4: July 7–18 (weekdays). Full day 9 a.m.–4 p.m.; morning session only 9–11:45 a.m.; afternoon session only 12:30–3:45 p.m.

For sessions 1- 3, students choose one course for the entire one-week session.

Grades 1–3: Students will enroll in a course that meets during the morning, while in the afternoon, students will participate in stimulating enrichment classes. Upon admission to Summer SAVY, students will receive more information about their enrichment classes.

Grades 4–7: Students will gain experience in a pre-college learning environment by participating in an academic course taught by leading educators and Vanderbilt faculty. These are full-day courses that will provide an in-depth look into a discipline and expose students to the habits of scholars.

For session 4, students may enroll in the morning course, the afternoon course or both courses. Each course lasts the entire two weeks.

Students may choose to come to multiple SAVY sessions and take a different course each session.

Where?

All SAVY classes are held on Vanderbilt’s Peabody College campus.

Registration for Summer SAVY 2014 begins Dec. 13 at noon. Log on to pty.vanderbilt.edu to register.
