Vanderbilt University professors Dan Cornfield and Alistair Newbern will discuss “Nashville for All of Us” at the Nov. 6 Thinking Out of the (Lunch) Box: Conversations with a Philosophical Flavor with David Wood.
The talks, held at the Nashville Public Library, begin with lunch at 11:30 a.m. They are hosted by David Wood, W. Alton Jones Professor of Philosophy at Vanderbilt and founder of the series.
Cornfield, a professor of sociology, collaborated with the group Nashville for All of Us on “Partnering for an Equitable and Inclusive Nashville,” a report intended to provide recommendations for a new 25-year plan for the city. Newbern, an assistant clinical professor of law, chairs the steering committee for Nashville for All of Us. The group was founded as part of a successful citywide campaign opposing a proposed English-only ordinance that would have required Metro Government to conduct business only in English.
The report “Partnering for an Equitable and Inclusive Nashville” was submitted to NashvilleNext, a joint effort of Metro Nashville government, local businesses, service organizations and community members to create a countywide plan to guide the city through 2040.
Thinking Out of the (Lunch) Box is sponsored by Friends of the Nashville Public Library and Vanderbilt Philosophy Department. No reservations are necessary to attend the event at 615 Church St.
Free box lunches will be available, starting at 11:30 a.m., for the first 200 people to arrive. A voluntary donation of $5 is requested per lunch to help defray expenses. Lunch will be in the library’s auditorium, but the conversation moves to the main lecture theater across the hall from noon to 1 p.m.
