The Department of Special Education at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of education and human development now offers an add-on endorsement for students enrolled in a teaching licensure program, as well as those who already hold a teaching license.
Students who successfully complete the endorsement will learn to recognize the characteristics of gifted learners, understand the processes for identifying a variety of gifted students and advocate for their needs and services. Students will also learn to create, adapt and implement curriculum and instructional components that encourage accelerated learning and talent development, develop strategies that support their social and emotional needs and focus on components of system-wide programs that support gifted students, their families and school personnel.
Requirements include four courses on the specific needs and characteristics of gifted students, their psychological development, theories on curriculum development and planning gifted programs. A practicum in gifted education is also required. Once the course work and practicum are complete, students will be able to take the Praxis exam in gifted education.
The endorsement aligns with Council for Exceptional Children and National Association for Gifted Children Teacher Knowledge and Skill Standards for Gifted and Talented Education.
