Discovery lecturer to discuss genetic information’s challenges

Wylie Burke, M.D., Ph.D., an expert in the social, ethical and policy implications of genetic information, will deliver the next Flexner Discovery Lecture on Thursday, Sept. 19.

She will discuss “Genome Medicine’s Challenge to Practical Wisdom,” beginning at 4 p.m. in 208 Light Hall. Her presentation is the Patricia Townsend Meador Lecture in Ethics and Health Care, sponsored by the Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society.

Burke is professor and chair of the Department of Bioethics and Humanities at the University of Washington. She is also director of the University of Washington Center for Genomics and Healthcare Equality, a National Institutes of Health-funded Center of Excellence in Ethical, Legal and Social Implications Research.

Burke earned a Ph.D. in Genetics and an M.D. from the University of Washington, where she also completed residency and fellowship education in Internal Medicine and Medical Genetics. She is a member of the Institute of Medicine and a past president of the American Society of Human Genetics.
