Free online course on data management for clinical research now underway

by | Posted on Wednesday, Sep. 18, 2013 — 4:00 PM

Vanderbilt University’s latest offering on the online learning platform Coursera, “Data Management for Clinical Research,” went live this week. More than 33,000 students have registered for the massive open online course or MOOC.

Paul Harris, associate professor of biomedical informatics and biomedical engineering, Stephany Duda, assistant professor of biomedical informatics, and Firas Wehbe, assistant professor of biomedical informatics are teaching the course.

Students in the course will learn concepts related to research data planning, collection, storage and dissemination. Instructors will offer information and best-practice guidelines for: investigator-initiated and sponsored research studies; single- and multi-center studies; and prospective data collection and secondary reuse of clinical data for research purposes. The curriculum will balance theoretical guidelines with the use of practical tools designed to assist in planning and conducting research. Real-world research examples, problem-solving exercises and hands-on training will ensure students are comfortable with all concepts.

The new course is the fifth Vanderbilt MOOC offered on Coursera since the university began its partnership with the platform in September 2012. Visit the Coursera website to register for the course and to explore Vanderbilt’s other free online offerings.
