David Street, M.D., assistant professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, has received an Exemplary Psychiatrist award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).David Street, M.D.

NAMI is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.

The annual award honors psychiatrists who “go the extra mile” in their commitment to excellent mental health care, reducing the stigma that has traditionally surrounded mental illness and working closely with NAMI members in their communities for public education and advocacy.

Street was nominated by NAMI Williamson County because he is involved in many aspects of care for consumers, including leading a weekly Dialectical Behavior Therapy group, training psychiatry residents, working with the Vanderbilt Employee Assistance Program and caring for patients.

He was honored at the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) annual conference in San Francisco in May and was recognized at the NAMI annual convention in San Antonio this week.

Receiving his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania, Street completed his psychiatric residency at Vanderbilt in 2007 followed by a fellowship in forensic psychiatry at Emory in 2008. He joined the Vanderbilt faculty in 2008. He is a consulting psychiatrist for the Faculty and Physician Wellness Program of Work/Life Connections-EAP and specializes in Forensic Psychiatry.
