Clinical Pharmacology celebrates milestone

by | Posted on Thursday, May. 9, 2013 — 10:09 AM

The 50th anniversary of the Division of Clinical Pharmacology will be celebrated Thursday, June 6, with a daylong scientific symposium and luncheon in the Student Life Center.

Reservations for the symposium and luncheon must be received by Friday, May 24, by visiting http://clinical-pharm.vumcevents.com or calling Special Events at 343-3025.

One of the oldest and largest of its kind in the world, the Division of Clinical Pharmacology was founded in 1963 by Allen Bass, M.D., then chair of the Department of Pharmacology, and by John A. Oates, M.D., who served as its first director for 25 years.

Oates, the Thomas F. Frist Sr. Professor of Medicine and chairman emeritus of the Department of Medicine, will be among 11 scientists who will discuss their research beginning at 10 a.m.

The symposium will conclude at 5 p.m.

From the beginning the division, which is jointly shared by the departments of Medicine and Pharmacology, became a thoroughfare for research related to the development and more rational use of drugs.

It continues to experience “robust growth,” said current division director David Harrison, M.D., the Betty and Jack Bailey Professor of Cardiology, and director of the Center for Vascular Biology.

“In the last year we have added three new faculty members in the areas of pharmacogenomics, autonomic function in obesity, and cancer biology,” Harrison said. “We currently have 35 faculty and more than 150 support staff.”

Since 1963, the division also has trained more than 350 fellows, more than any other division of its kind in the world, Harrison said. Thirty-four current fellows are listed on the division’s fellowship page.
