VITA offers free tax service to low income families

Tax time—especially for lower income families—can be extremely stressful (not to mention expensive). Last year, more than 10,000 individuals and families across Middle Tennessee received support through United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, a number which is expected to increase again this year.

Gifts can be made to this and other community initiatives.

VITA provides trained volunteers who help those in households earning less than $49,000 per year to prepare and file their tax returns at no charge. Last year, VITA clients in Davidson County alone saved more than $1.8 million in tax preparation fees, and participants statewide collected approximately $14 million in tax refunds.

Between Jan. 15 and April 15, 2013, watch for VITA sites to pop up across the region, including on the Vanderbilt campus.

How You Can Help

VITA is an initiative of the Nashville Alliance for Financial Independence (NAFI), which recognizes that assets are key to long-lasting financial stability. NAFI is one of many agencies comprising United Way of Metropolitan Nashville. You may designate it or any United Way member organization when you give to the community through Vanderbilt Gives.

Community giving is tax-deductible. Payroll deduction makes it easy to give monthly. Visit the Vanderbilt Gives: Building a Community With Hope website for more information about giving options and to make your gift today.
