SECURITY NOTICE: Indecent exposure

UPDATE (Nov. 7): A white male who was being sought by VUPD for exposing himself has been located, arrested and taken into custody. The suspect was located by VUPD and interviewed, and confessed to the crime during the interview.

Originally posted Nov. 5: On Monday, Nov. 5, at approximately 8:15 a.m., two Vanderbilt staff members reported to VUPD that they observed a white male sitting in a vehicle at the metered parking area at Vanderbilt Place and 24th Avenue South. The male was reported to be masturbating. When he realized he was being watched, the person left the parking area and drove south on 24th Avenue South. A vehicle matching the description was seen at the intersection of 24th Avenue South and Highland Avenue and was last seen turning south onto 25th Avenue South.

Description: The suspect was described as a white male with dark brown hair and wearing glasses, driving a red four-door Volkswagen sedan with the Tennessee license plate G9390E.

Risk Reduction Tips

  • Scan the area before you exit or approach your vehicle/building and while you proceed between sites.
  • Have your key ready in hand to quickly access the door of your vehicle/building.
  • If someone piggybacks on your entry and you feel uncomfortable or concerned about speaking to them directly, contact VUPD immediately.
  • Avoid Isolated or dark areas.
  • Travel with confidence and purpose.
  • Report any suspicious persons to VUPD. Be prepared to describe the person as best as you can.
  • If strangers approach, maintain a distance and be observant; if they are in a vehicle, get the license plate number.
  • Stay alert and trust your instincts. If you feel uneasy, leave. Go to a safe location and notify VUPD.
  • Know the location of emergency phones.
  • Stay alert and plan ahead for “What if?” situations.
