Short-term disability requirements waived during Open Enrollment

Short-term disability insurance (STDi) coverage provides income protection when you are unable to work for a short time period due to a covered injury or illness. In the past, employees may have been discouraged by the insurer’s requirement that new enrollees submit health information. This year, Vanderbilt has reached an agreement with our new provider, Unum, to allow employees to enroll regardless of current health status. After this initial opportunity, new enrollees will need to submit health information, and coverage may be denied.

This insurance is critical for employees who may not have accrued sick time or who have little available due to past use. This is the modern “sick bank” meant to continue pay during illness, and we encourage employees to enroll. Once you have used your required sick and vacation time, STDi coverage provides income protection up to 66 and two-thirds percent of your annual base benefits pay (up to a $2,500 per week maximum). Common uses for STDi include absences for maternity leave, back injury or cancer treatment.

There are two options for STDi:

Option 1: 15-day wait. Coverage under this option begins on the 15th calendar day after your disability begins and continues up to 24 weeks. Use the online STDi Calculator.

Option 2: 30-day wait. Coverage begins on the 30th calendar day after your disability begins and continues up to 22 weeks. Use the online STDi Calculator.

Learn more about short-term disability insurance and other benefits on the Open Enrollment website.

How to Enroll for STDi:

Enroll online using the Open Enrollment Tool when you make your other elections. No need to go to the provider’s website as in year’s past.
