SECURITY NOTICE: Update – Suspect apprehended

UPDATE: A subject has been apprehended in connection to the incident reported below.

On Wednesday, July 11, about 1:15 p.m., an unknown male subject approached a female staff member from behind and grabbed her and touched her inappropriately while she was sitting in the Vanderbilt University Medical Center cafeteria. The subject left the cafeteria and proceeded toward the second floor waiting area of Vanderbilt University Hospital.

Description: The suspect was described as a black male, approximately 15-19 years old, approximately 5’4″-5’6″ with a slim build. He was wearing a bright green “oversized” T-shirt, denim shorts and white tennis shoes.

Risk Reduction Tips

  • Scan the area before you exit or approach your building or vehicle and while you proceed between sites.
  • Avoid isolated or dark areas.
  • Travel with confidence and purpose.
  • If strangers approach, maintain a distance and be observant; if they are in a vehicle, get the license plate number.
  • Stay alert and trust your instincts. If you feel uneasy, leave. Go to a safe location and notify VUPD.
  • Avoid going to ATMs alone, after dark or if suspicious persons are nearby.
  • Stay alert and plan ahead for “What if?” situations.
