Changes made to VU Live SkyDrive space

In the fall of 2010, Vanderbilt University and Microsoft began a partnership to bring Windows Live SkyDrive services to all Vanderbilt faculty, staff and students. Windows Live SkyDrive combines the features of Office Live Workspace with the ability to create and edit documents using Microsoft Office Live Web Apps, free online companions to Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. Office Web Apps offer the familiar Office interface for viewing and editing files. Free online cloud storage was also made available.

Recently, Microsoft updated SkyDrive services and these changes affect the amount of storage space available. Until the recent change, 25 GB of SkyDrive storage was offered to every user. Of that space, only 5 GB could be synced online, and syncing had to be done via Windows Live Mesh. With the new changes, 7 GB is synced online and Live Mesh is no longer necessary. All syncing is done through the SkyDrive app (available for Windows, Windows Phone, iPhone/ iPad). However, Microsoft has reduced storage for all users to 7 GB unless they log into their existing SkyDrive account and claim their extra 18 GB. Microsoft has not yet listed a deadline for claiming SkyDrive space; however, they state their offer will only be available for a “limited time.”
