Great Performances presents Spirit of Uganda Feb. 25

Spirit of Uganda

With standing drums, dramatic choreography, layered rhythms and gorgeous call-and-response vocals, Spirit of Uganda brings to life the sounds and movements of East Africa.

The group will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Langford Auditorium as part of the Great Performances at Vanderbilt series.

Spirit of Uganda is the professional training program of Empower African Children and under the artistic direction of Peter Kasule. On stage, 22 performers, ages 8-18, share the histories, legends and beliefs of Uganda and represent 2.4 million orphans. As Africa’s next generation, the company promotes awareness of Uganda’s dual crises of AIDS and civil war and raises funds to support themselves and others in their homeland.

Tickets are $5 for Vanderbilt students and $18 for Vanderbilt faculty and staff.

Single ticket prices for the general public are $40, $35 and $30. Tickets for non-Vanderbilt students are $10 with an ID. Tickets may be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets and at the Sarratt Student Center and Langford Auditorium box offices.

The performance is being supported in part by the Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center at Vanderbilt.
