Giles Knox, associate professor of history of art at Indiana University, will discuss “Paragone and the Hand of the Artist: Velázquez, Rembrandt, Vermeer” at 4:10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in Cohen Memorial Hall, Room 203.
His talk, which is free and open to the public, is the Norman L. and Roselea J. Goldberg Lecture in the History of Art at Vanderbilt, sponsored by the Department of History of Art.
The focus of Giles’ research is Southern European art of the 15th-17th centuries; art and the Counter-Reformation; the civic politics of religious art; and Velázquez and Italian art theory. His most recent publication is The Late Paintings of Velázquez : Theorizing Painterly Performance (2009).
