Learn how to walk/run a half-marathon Jan. 19

Health Plus offers lots of ways to get or stay fit in the new year. At noon Thursday, Jan. 19, attend the Life Phase Series presentation “Run/Walk a Half Marathon: Basics and Beyond” at Medical Center East, Room 8380A.

Angel Bachuss, exercise specialist at the Vanderbilt Dayani Center, will offer guidelines to prepare individuals for running or walking a half-marathon. Learn the basics of training, nutrition, hydration, cross-training and stretching that will get you to the finish line. Whether you are running for a charity event, fitness or pure enjoyment, you can begin your training here or learn new techniques to improve your running.

In addition, Start! Challenge 1 for 2012 is in progress, and it’s not too late to get involved. Record your activities or steps in the Start! online Step Tracker.  Accumulate a total of at least 200,000 steps by March 31 and receive a prize.

Walking is a great way to maintain heart health and overall fitness. And a healthy routine is the least likely to be abandoned, because it’s easy, convenient and fun.

Health Plus has a number of new classes on its fitness schedule, including Zumba, yoga and more. View the complete schedule and find a class to meet your fitness level and interests.
