Video of the talks will be available after the event
Three leading experts on issues of religion and sexuality will speak at Vanderbilt University the week of Aug. 1. The public is invited to the lectures in Room 122 of Vanderbilt Divinity School, which will also be videotaped.
The lectures are part of the Summer Institute for Seminary Students, which will bring advanced seminary students to Vanderbilt July 31 to Aug. 5 for workshops and lectures. The Summer Institute for Seminary Students is a collaboration between the Carpenter Program in Religion, Gender and Sexuality at Vanderbilt Divinity School and the Human Rights Campaign.
Three lectures will be open to the public:
– 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1, Mary Hunt, co-founder and co-director of the Women’s Alliance for Theology, Ethics and Ritual, will speak on “Responsible Academics are Useful Activists.”
– 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, Amanullah De Sondy, visiting assistant professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Miami, Fla., will speak on “The Challenge of LGBTIQ Issues in the Study of Islam”
– 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, Jay Michaelson, executive director of Nehirim (a nonprofit which builds community for LGBT Jews, partners and allies), will speak on “Queer Scholarship and Queer Activism: Liminality, Identity and the Plight of the ‘Good Gays.’”
