May grants announced by Division of Sponsored Research

The Division of Sponsored Research received notification in May that the following grants in excess of $25,000 had been awarded:

Julie A. Adams, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received an award in the amount of $75,000 by the Department of Defense for “Cognitively Compatible and Collaboratively Balanced Human-robot Teaming in Urban Military Domains.”

Bharat L. Bhuva, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received an award in the amount of $50,000 by the Cisco Systems Foundation for “Cisco TSMC Logic Test Chip Design and Test.”

Xiaohong Bi, Biomedical Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $107,691 by the National Cancer Institute for “Development of Spectroscopic Biomarkers of Bone Quality in Metastatic Disease.” Anita Mahadevan-Jansen is co-principal investigator.

Charles A. Brau, Physics and Astronomy, has received an award in the amount of $124,000 by the Department of Defense for “Development and Fabrication of Field-emitter-array Cathodes for Tests at Naval Postgraduate School.” Jim L. Davidson, Jonathan D. Jarvis and Kalman Varga are co-principal investigators.

Douglas B. Clark, Teaching and Learning, has received an award in the amount of $441,235 by the Department of Education for “Explanation and Prediction Increasing Gains and Metacognition (EPIGAME) (NCER-EdTech; Development).”

David E. Cliffel, Chemistry, has received an award in the amount of $140,000 by the National Science Foundation for “Biomaterial Interfaces for Photoactive Proteins.” G. Kane Jennings is co-principal investigator.

Julia P. Cohen, Jewish Studies, has received an award in the amount of $41,874 by the National Endowment for the Humanities for “The Sephardic Studies Reader, 1730-1950.”

Bruce E. Compas, Psychology and Human Development, has received an award in the amount of $41,800 by the National Institute on Mental Health for “NRSA for Erin Rodriquez: Communication, Coping and Executive Function in Children with Cancer.”

Donald L. Compton, Special Education, has received an award in the amount of $332,459 by the Department of Education for “Predictors and Subtypes of Reading Disabilities:  Implications for Instruction for Late Emergers.” Douglas H. Fuchs, Lynn S. Fuchs and Mark W. Lipsey are co-principal investigators.

David S. Cordray, Psychology and Human Development, has received an award in the amount of $33,674 by the Department of Education for “LPA Subcontract Amendment.” Georgine M. Pion is co-principal investigator.

Peter T. Cummings, Chemical Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $76,700 by the Department of Energy for “Joint Faculty Appointment – Vanderbilt University/Oak Ridge National Laboratory.”

James H. Dickerson, Physics and Astronomy, has received an award in the amount of $114,085 by the Department of Defense for “Fabrication of Robust, Smooth, Homogeneous Nanoparticulate Ceramic Coatings via Electrophoretic Deposition.”

David J. Ernst, Physics and Astronomy, has received an award in the amount of $105,500 by the National Science Foundation for “REU:  Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Physics and Astronomy at Vanderbilt University.” Keivan G. Stassun is co-principal investigator.

Dale C. Farran, Teaching and Learning, has received an award in the amount of $160,538 by the Department of Education for “Postdoctoral Training Grant.” Mark W. Lipsey is co-principal investigator.

Lynn S. Fuchs, Special Education, has received an award in the amount of $228,288 by the Department of Education for “Arithmetical and Cognitive Antecedents and Concomitants of Algebraic Skill.”

Michael Goldfarb, Mechanical Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $906,047 by the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, National Robotic and Intelligent Systems Center for “Bionic Prosthesis for Upper Extremity Amputees.” Huseyin A. Varol is co-principal investigator.

Steven L. Goodbred, Geology, has received an award in the amount of $668,671 by the Department of Defense for “Environmental Stress and Human Migration in Developing Coastal Nations:  Co-evolving Human and Physical Landscapes in Bangladesh, with a Comparison to Sri Lanka.” Mark D.
