The 19th century was an unusually fertile period of thought. The ideas of evolution, progress, liberty, radical encounter with God, the struggle for existence, human control over human destiny, and universal caring were invented or substantially developed during this time. Some of the leading ideas of the 19th century are discussed and the extent to which we are still struggling to deal with the problems they could not resolve are assessed.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Vanderbilt supports lifelong learning.
