MEDIA ADVISORY: Peabody and Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools launch new master’s degree program

by | Posted on Monday, Jul. 19, 2010 — 12:58 PM

July 26 is the launch date for the new Master’s in Teaching and Learning in Urban Schools program, a partnership between Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of education and human development and Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools.

The 16 members of the inaugural class will participate in orientation classes and a kick-off luncheon at 12:30 p.m., followed by remarks from Peabody Dean Camilla Benbow and Director of Schools Jesse Register.

The new program is focused on improving teaching in urban middle schools and is the result of a partnership between Peabody and MNPS. Students attend the program tuition free and agree to teach in Metro Schools for five years – two years while enrolled in the degree program and three years following graduation. Sharon Yates, lecturer in education, is program director.

The program, open to recent college graduates as well as new and existing teachers, prepares students to teach in upper elementary grades through grade 8, with a focus on literacy, mathematics or science.

In addition to the 30 hours of coursework, students enrolled in the two-year program will teach in a MNPS school throughout their studies. Peabody faculty will provide on-site coaching and mentoring. Peabody researchers will track the implementation and progress of the program to devise a model for other such partnerships.
