SAVY Summer: Vanderbilt’s Saturday program for gifted students announces a new summer edition

Vanderbilt Programs for Talented Youth is now accepting applications for Summer/Saturday Academy at Vanderbilt for the Young, a new summer edition of the successful SAVY Saturday program.

“This first summer SAVY invites highly qualified, motivated and gifted elementary and early middle school students to apply and select from a number of exciting, accelerated and interesting courses,” Tamra Stambaugh, PTY director, said. “SAVY students receive the social, emotional and intellectual benefits of being in a classroom of academic peers. The classes engage and stimulate students, and they provide opportunities for students to engage in critical thinking, reasoning and problem solving.”

Summer SAVY will be offered for two weeks this summer, July 13-17 and July 20-24. The same courses will be offered each week. Students can enroll in both weeks and take two different courses or choose just one week and course.

Classes will be held from 9 to 11:45 a.m. and tuition is $375 per week. Eligible students include those entering grades 1-7 in the fall of 2009 who test near the 95th percentile or above on a standardized achievement or ability test. Application forms are available at: http://pty.vanderbilt.edu/savy.html. A copy of the student’s test scores should be included with the application as well as the $25 non-refundable application fee.

Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Admission decision letters will be mailed within three weeks of the receipt of the application. Limited, need-based financial aid is available.

PTY launched its SAVY in the spring of 2008. SAVY’s curriculum is based on empirical research and proven to be effective in promoting critical thinking and advanced content knowledge for gifted students. The classes are held at the University School of Nashville and are taught by experienced teachers and teaching assistants.
