Free public exhibit featuring works of contemporary artist R. Sidney opens Jan. 30 at Vanderbilt’s Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center

Contemporary artist R. Sidney’s colored pencil etchings will be on display Jan. 30 through Feb. 27 at a free, public exhibit at Vanderbilt University’s Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center.

The hours for the center are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. An opening reception for the exhibit will be held Friday, Jan. 30, at noon at the center.

Through his work, R. Sidney hopes to encourage a greater appreciation for cultural diversity. His art has garnered praise around the country.

At age 13, he received an art scholarship to the Chicago Art Institute and eight years later showed his work at an exhibit in San Francisco, Calif. The exposure he gained through the San Francisco exhibit resulted in an opportunity for him to study art in Paris. However, he opted instead to return to college – graduating from Dillard University in 1963.
