Susie S. Stalcup, the chief fundraising officer for Columbia University Medical Center, has been selected Vanderbilt University’s new vice chancellor for development and alumni relations, Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos announced Tuesday.
"Given Vanderbilt’s momentum and stature, this position commanded extraordinary interest, and Susie distinguished herself from the most sought-after candidates in the country," Zeppos said. Stalcup’s appointment, which followed a national search, is effective Jan. 1, 2009 and is pending upon approval by the Vanderbilt Board of Trust..
As vice president for development at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City since 2004, Stalcup has led all aspects of CUMC’s $1 billion capital campaign, which met its goal two-and-a-half years before the scheduled December 2011 conclusion.
At Vanderbilt she will work to complete the $1.75 billion Shape the Future Campaign, which is scheduled to conclude in 2010. She will oversee development and alumni activities throughout Vanderbilt, including the medical center and all schools and programs in the university.

Board of Trust member, Shape the Future Campaign Committee Chair and member of the search committee Rodes Hart said, "I am thrilled with the appointment of Susie Stalcup as our new vice chancellor. Susie’s accomplishments and credentials are impressive. She will be a great asset to our development initiatives, particularly the Shape the Future campaign. She is a proven development executive whose talents will be put to immediate use on our campaign."
Jeffrey R. Balser, chair of the search committee, associate vice chancellor for health affairs and dean of the Vanderbilt School of Medicine, said, "It is clear that Susie Stalcup is the extraordinary person we’ve been searching for – she has all the right qualities to lead development and alumni affairs at Vanderbilt. As a person she reflects our culture, and as a professional she will creatively project our impact as a leading research university across the globe."
As vice chancellor for development and alumni relations, Stalcup assumes responsibility for one of several positions held by Zeppos before he was named Vanderbilt chancellor in March 2008.
Stalcup joined CUMC in 2002 as deputy vice president for development after directing a successful campaign at Baylor College of Medicine. From 1991 to 1996 she was senior director of planned giving at Rice University.
Before entering higher education advancement, Stalcup worked for more than 15 years in finance and estate planning, first at Merrill Lynch Pierce Fenner & Smith in Oklahoma City and New York City and later as senior vice president for trusts and bank investments at First Financial Bank Holdings in Abilene, Texas.
She is a certified financial planner, attended Wheaton College in Illinois and holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Oklahoma.
Stalcup has served on numerous boards and was treasurer of the National Committee on Planned Giving and president of the Houston Chapter Planned Giving Council. She belongs to the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy and the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
She has volunteered with charitable and civic organizations throughout her career, including global missions outreach in Estonia and Healthcare for the Homeless in Houston, which she helped to develop.
Zeppos extended his thanks to the search committee "for the excellent work," and Balser said, "I am tremendously grateful to the search committee for their hard work and commitment to find the best candidate in the country for this position."
In addition to Balser and Hart, the search committee comprised Board of Trust member Joanne Hayes, Trustee and former President of the Alumni Association Board Karen Fesmire, Executive Associate Vice Chancellor for Development Robert Early, Provost Richard McCarty, Associate Provost for College Halls Susan Barge, Student Government President Joseph Williams, Dean of the Divinity School James Hudnut-Beumler, Professor of History Elizabeth Lunbeck, Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center Director Jennifer Pietenpol and Vice Chancellor David Williams.
