Acclaimed African American filmmaker Charles Burnett to speak at Vanderbilt University Oct. 17

Celebrated independent film director Charles Burnett will host a conversation on Friday, Oct. 17, from 4-5 p.m. in the auditorium of the Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center at Vanderbilt University. A reception will follow from 5-7 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.

The Chicago Tribune has called Burnett “one of America’s very best filmmakers” and the New York Times named him “the nation’s least-known great filmmaker and most gifted black director.” His films include My Brother’s Wedding and Killer of Sheep as well as To Sleep with Anger. His latest feature is Nujoma: Where Others Wavered, shot in Namibia.

This event is held in conjunction with the Nashville International Black Film Festival and is sponsored by the Black Cultural Center, Film Studies Program, Office of the Dean of Students and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs.
